OEE for MSME job shops, without the jargon

OEE — Overall Equipment Effectiveness — gets quoted at OEM audits and misunderstood almost everywhere. It's not a mysterious index; it's three simple ratios multiplied together. For an MSME job shop, understanding what each one measures is the difference between chasing the wrong problem and fixing the real one.

The formula, in plain terms

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality. Because they multiply, a machine that scores 90% on each lands at roughly 73% OEE, not 90% — small losses compound. That compounding is the whole point: it stops any single number from hiding the others.

Availability — was the machine running?

Of the time the machine was scheduled to run, how much did it actually run? Availability is eaten by breakdowns, changeovers and setup, and waiting for material or an operator. If your OEE is low and availability is the culprit, the fix is maintenance and changeover discipline — not running faster.

Performance — did it run at rated speed?

When it was running, was it hitting its rated cycle time? Performance loss is small stops, reduced speed, and minor stoppages that never make it into a breakdown log. This is the sneakiest loss because nothing looks broken — the machine is just quietly running at 80% of what it should.

Quality — was the output good the first time?

Of what it produced, how much was right first time — no rework, no rejection? Quality loss hits twice: you've spent the machine time and the material, and now you spend more reworking or scrapping. For a job shop on tight OEM margins, rejection is often the fastest OEE gain available.

Why measuring it daily beats measuring it perfectly

Job shops get stuck trying to instrument every machine perfectly before they measure anything. Don't. A daily OEE from the production and rejection data you already record — even if approximate — surfaces the biggest loss driver on each line, which is what actually moves the number. Perfect sensors can come later; the loss is bleeding now.
